Expanded and revised from the first edition, the 2006 NFPA 484 sets safety requirements for any metal that is considered a combustible metal, including aluminum, lithium, magnesium, tantalum, titanium, and zirconium.

The document provides requirements for fire suppression--critical information in light of recent major combustible metal fires where water was used inappropriately. Also included are rules for the production, processing, finishing, handling, storage and use of all metals and alloys that are in a form capable of combustion or explosion.

  • New material on alkali metals and niobium
  • A new chapter on applicability that states the requirements for determining whether a metal is considered a combustible metal, and consolidates the fire protection requirements for all metals

Annexes provide explanatory information about the unique burning characteristics of combustible metals.
