The 2018 edition of NFPA 1143 guides fire service agencies toward successful wildland fire management, to help reduce fire loss and devastation. Every year, wildland fire incidents in North America pose increasing threats to adjacent communities, often overwhelming the resources of local first responders. The 2018 edition of NFPA 1143: Standard for Wildland Fire Management provides requirements related to prevention, mitigation, preparation, and suppression of fires in the wildland and wildland urban interface (WUI). NFPA 1143 helps fire departments and state/federal land management agencies: Determine what factors should be considered when developing a written risk/hazard assessment and mitigation plan Develop plans for fire response, preparedness, finances, safety, and training of personnel Identify what management practices should be followed in the management of wildland fire incidents Know what post-incident activities should be conducted The 2018 edition of this critical Standard presents: Revised terminology that is more representative of the document\'s intent Changes to training and qualifications that better align with NFPA 1051: Standard for Wildland Fire Fighter Personnel Professional Qualifications or the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) curriculum Revisions to the incident management chapter to align with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and NFPA 1026: Standard for Incident Management Personnel Professional Qualifications Clarified terminology and revised definitions in fire suppression subsections, including for Size-up, Fire Engagement and Management, Mop-up and Demobilization. Revised public information officer (PIO) responsibilities to complement NIMS and revised safety officer responsibilities to include participation in tactics and planning meetings that are also outlined in NIMS Clarified documentation requirements for finance and administration, along with updates to the NWCG referenced publications Local government and volunteer fire departments should use this edition to develop an approach consistent with today\'s NFPA® standards on emergency services incident management and disaster management programs, and to keep current with fire fighter safety practices.
