Description of PD 6582:1993 1993The scope of the Generic Standards specifies the applicability of the standards to products intended for use in a given environment. As these Generic Standards may be applied to all relevant electrical and electronic equipment and systems, electromagnetic phenomena in the broad frequency range 0 Hz to 400 GHz have been considered to ensure electromagnetic compatibility in most situations. From a practical point of view and from the probability of occurrence of disturbances, the emphasis has been given to frequencies up to 1 GHz for both immunity and emission. Because of lack of availability of approved standards, tests have been limited, for example up to 1 GHz in case of emission and 500 MHz for immunity. An extension of these frequency ranges is foreseen when basic standards are revised. The emission limits are required to restrict electromagnetic disturbances to maximum permissible levels, for these specific environments in order to avoid interference in other equipment or systems. The emission limits in the radio-frequency range are to protect the effective use of the radio-frequency spectrum. All revisions of existing and drafting of future product standards shall take this into account. Guidance on the selection and use of standards for compliance with Directive 89/336/EEC (EMC Directive).
