Description of ASTM-F3728 2024

ASTM F3728-24

Active Standard: Standard Specification for Release Characteristics of Ski-Binding-Boot (S-B-B) Systems for Recreational Skiing

ASTM F3728

Scope

1.1 This specification covers the required release and retention characteristics of ski-binding-boot (S-B-B) systems. This specification is applicable to all recreational snow skiing bindings that have safety release mechanisms. Specifically, this performance standard establishes the minimum performance requirement for release and retention of a ski boot in a ski binding under loading scenarios that relate to ski shop testing and loads that simulate forward and backward twisting falls.

1.2 This specification is a performance standard and is not intended to restrict design. Although a S-B-B system that meets this specification will help reduce the risk of some types of injuries to the tibia and fibula in some falls and accidents, the protection is limited, and skiing involves inherent risks of injury; this standard does not purport to address all the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use, and it is to be clearly understood that compliance with this standard and other applicable standards or guidelines in no way guarantees that injury can be prevented. The user is responsible for participating in the sport within his/her abilities and the nature of the snow conditions which may vary widely. Compliance with the common-sense rules of the sport’s safety, including any applicable responsibility codes, is essential to help reduce the risk of personal injury.

1.3 All testing and requirements of this specification shall be in accordance with Test Method F504-05(2022), except where noted herein.

1.4 This specification is intended for use with all recreational S-B-B systems, including systems labeled as alpine, alpine touring (including pin/tech systems), systems that use alpine boots with improved walking soles (walking or GripWalk), and systems that use pins as part of the ski binding-boot interface. Use of ski bindings that do not meet the requirements of this standard or using incompatible combinations of ski bindings and boots can cause unexpected release and retention characteristics.

1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
