Description of ASTM-D1014 2025

ASTM D1014-25

Redline Standard: Standard Practice for Conducting Exterior Exposure Tests of Paints and Coatings on Metal Substrates

ASTM D1014

Scope

1.1 This practice covers procedures to be followed for direct weathering exposure of exterior paints and coatings to the outdoor environment when applied to metal surfaces. When originators of a weathering test have the actual exposure conducted by a contracting agency, the specific conditions for the exposure of test and control specimens shall be clearly defined and mutually agreed upon between all parties.

1.2 This practice is intended to evaluate the durability of a paint or coating, and its ability thereafter to protect the metal substrate from corrosion.

1.3 This practice includes exposure testing of factory coated metals also known as coil coatings or industrial coatings, and other paints applied to standard test substrates.

1.4 This practice includes detailed information on the preparation of metal substrates to which the paint is applied.

1.5 This practice is not intended to be used to evaluate the corrosion of bare metals.

1.6 Experience indicates that the metal used as a test substrate has a significant effect upon weathering results. The purpose of this practice is to define specific steel and other metal surfaces to be used for testing in order to minimize this source of variability.

1.7 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parenthesis are for information only.

1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.9 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
