Description of ASTM-B711 2013ASTM B711 - 13Standard Specification for Concentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum-Alloy Conductors, Steel Reinforced (AACSR) (6201)Active Standard ASTM B711 | Developed by Subcommittee: B01.07 Book of Standards Volume: 02.03 ASTM B711Abstract This specification covers concentric-lay-stranded conductors made from round-alloy 6201-T81 hard:solution heat treated, cold worked, and then artificially aged wire and round zinc-coated, Zn-5Al-MM coated, aluminum-coated, or aluminum-clad steel core wire for use as overhead electric conductors. Cold-pressure welds, electric-butt welds, and electric-butt, cold-upset welds in the finished individual aluminum alloy wires composing the conductor may be made during the stranding process. The direction of lay of the outside layer of aluminum-alloy wires shall be right-hand. The direction of lay of the aluminum alloy and steel wires shall be reversed in successive layers. The rated strength of a conductor shall be taken as the sum of the strengths of the aluminum alloy and steel components. The mass and electrical resistance of a unit length of stranded conductor shall be calculated. The ares of cross section may be determined by calculations from diameter measurements of the component aluminum wires at any point when measured perpendicularly to their axes. This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. It is informational only and not an official part of the standard; the full text of the standard itself must be referred to for its use and application. ASTM does not give any warranty express or implied or make any representation that the contents of this abstract are accurate, complete or up to date. 1. Scope 1.1 This specification covers concentric-lay-stranded conductors made from round aluminum-alloy 6201-T81 hard: solution heat treated, cold worked, and then artificially aged wire and round zinc-coated, Zn-5Al-MM coated, aluminum-coated, or aluminum-clad steel core wire for use as overhead electric conductors (Explanatory Note 1 and Note 2 ).
Note 1 The alloy and temper designations conform to ANSI H35.1. Aluminum alloy 6201 corresponds to Unified
Numbering System alloy A96201 in accordance with Practice E527 .
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use .
