Redwood Lumber & Timbers: Advanced Specification Details, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: HS-EN-167404-0725

Redwood lumber and timbers from sustainably managed and harvested forests offer warmth, durability, and strength in indoor and outdoor projects. This course covers the performance characteristics, environmental benefits, and applications of Redwood, including several case studies that highlight the beauty and versatility of Redwood products. Details are presented on differentiating the grades of Redwood, specifying the right grade for the project type, and the specification resources that are available.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the modern forestry practices that contribute to Redwood's long-term sustainability and how certification to Forest Stewardship Council standards ensures that Redwood forests are well managed.
  • Discuss how Redwood supports the 2030 Challenge and contributes to biophilic design and LEED v4 BD+C, ID+C and SITES v2 credits.
  • Explain the results of an updated life cycle assessment (LCA) study and environmental product declaration (EPD) for Redwood lumber and their relevance to sustainable building practices.
  • State building code requirements for durable and safe materials and how Redwood meets these requirements.
  • Review the grade categories of Redwood and its attributes and performance characteristics that make it an environmentally friendly solution for wood projects.
