Uniting Sustainability and Aesthetics: Wood-Plastic Composite Cladding for Rainscreen Assemblies, Decks, & Railings, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: NT-EN-165102-0824

Today's building professionals seeking better moisture management and energy efficiency from the exteriors of their projects are turning to rainscreens as a solution to both. Wood-plastic composite (WPC) provides a durable and long-lasting material suitable for use in rainscreen systems, decks, railings, and more. Reviewed in this course are the manufacturing process, performance and green benefits, and installation of WPC cladding that is fully capped with a polymeric plastic 'shield," providing long-term resistance to moisture, staining, and fading.

Learning Objectives

  • State the sustainable manufacturing process and green benefits of WPC material and how it can contribute toward earning points in the LEED green building program.
  • Define the rainscreen principle designed to provide moisture management and the components and codes/standards associated with a rainscreen assembly.
  • Explain how WPC cladding is installed in a rainscreen system, allowing for air circulation while providing moisture protection.
  • Contrast the performance of various types of WPC material used for decks, deck tiles, and railings in order to select the most appropriate solution to ensure long-term sustainability.
