Sustainable Cladding Solutions for Innovative Architecture, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: LC-EN-156903-1224

Innovative and sustainable, powder-coated/sublimated extruded aluminum products are ideal for exterior, interior, and high-traffic architectural applications. Reviewed in this course is an overview of the properties and finishing processes of this material along with discussions of its applications, design criteria, and testing standards.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how the mix of aluminum's material makeup, its natural properties, and the nature of the extrusion process combine to create a durable, sustainable material that is not vulnerable to damage caused by moisture, freeze/thaw cycles, and fire.
  • Describe the powder coating and sublimation finishing techniques that provide more durable and resilient finishes compared to traditional printing methods.
  • State the benefits of designing with powder-coated/sublimated extruded aluminum products that replicate the warmth and beauty of real wood without its associated maintenance requirements, building restrictions, and combustibility.
  • Recall the applications these materials are suited for including louvers for sunshading and privacy ventilated soffits, and rainscreen assemblies that protect the wall assembly and improve the energy efficiency of the building.
