Universal Design: Making a Place for Everyone, 2024

SOSS Door Hardware The design community has become increasingly focused on ensuring that the products and places they create suit the diverse needs and differing abilities of everyone. This course explores how universal design principles and products can inform design to create places that are safer, more comfortable, visually appealing, and usable and that provide a richer experience for all users. This exploration utilizes the examples of door hardware and the needs of a diverse group of users including senior citizens and others to explain some of these principles and provides a detailed examination of a universally designed door latch. 60 minutes.

  • Prioritize those issues that should be addressed to enable safe and comfortable use by everyone in every place.
  • Exceed basic accessibility requirements to improve the experiential quality for all users.
  • Identify and specify products that are designed using universal design principles.

Faculty BIO

Deidre Whitman is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for SOSS Door Hardware and celebrates seventeen years with the company this year. She graduated from Lourdes University with her bachelor's degree in 2010. Her career with SOSS started with order processing and customer service, eventually leading to outside sales and sales management. Deidre has also been involved with research and development and bringing new SOSS products to market. She enjoys learning how she can help solve design roadblocks and teaching people how SOSS Door Hardware can help them bring their projects to life. She believes in the quality of SOSS Invisible Hinges and the value SOSS Door Hardware products bring to people and their projects.
