This course introduces the concept of biophilia'the human desire to connect with nature'and examines how paint, coatings, and color can have biophilic effects. The positive impacts of biophilic design on health, well-being, and workplace productivity are reviewed. The environmental benefits of paint are discussed, and an overview of color trends and influences within a biophilic framework is presented.

Learning Objectives

  • Give a definition of biophilia and outline biophilia's tangible benefits to well-being and employee productivity.
  • Recognize biophilic design features and design strategies in the built environment.
  • Recall the role color can play in biophilic design.
  • Explain how paint and coatings are inherently eco-efficient and can contribute to the overall sustainability of a building project.
  • Identify what moods and psychological responses are associated with what color groups.
  • Describe how different industries are incorporating biophilic color strategies into their interior design.

Faculty BIO

Dominika Bandyk is the Manager of Architectural and Designer Services for Dunn-Edwards Paints. She has spent the last 16 years in the design industry, receiving a bachelor's degree of art in interior design from the Design Institute of San Diego. Her passion for architecture, design, and sustainability brought her to Dunn-Edwards, where she has held many positions over the last seven years in both store operations and sales. Dominika is currently responsible for leading the Architectural and Design Team in the southwestern United States. She is an industry member of ASID.
