Expansion Joint Cover Systems, 2024
CEU: 0.125 | CEU Code: CS-EN-137702-0624

An expansion joint is a structural gap designed to accommodate the movement of a building in a controlled manner, preventing damage to the building's internal and external finishes. Expansion joints run throughout a building in walls, ceilings, and floors. Expansion joint covers provide a covered transition across an expansion opening and remain unaffected by the relative movement of the two surfaces either side of the joint. This course explains how to determine joint movement requirements and how to size a joint. It also discusses the performance of different expansion joint cover systems and the applicable fire protection and building codes.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the purpose of an expansion joint cover system in terms of its function and impact on life safety.
  • Evaluate expansion joint movement requirements and explain how to size a joint to meet those requirements to ensure a cover protects an opening from weather, fire, and movement.
  • Explain how expansion joint cover systems create safer, more accessible buildings by discussing how the ADA Standards for Accessible Design apply.
  • Discuss current building code requirements and testing standards for fire barrier cover systems.
  • Recall the fundamentals of static and dynamic fire barriers for expansion joint covers.
  • Describe the features of different types of expansion joint cover systems and discuss the factors that must be considered when selecting an expansion joint cover system for a specific type of building project.

Faculty BIO

After graduating from Pennsylvania College of Technology in 2002, Dan Chapman began his career at Construction Specialties as an estimator in the expansion joint covers division. In 2008, Dan transitioned to inside sales where he provided design assistance for architects on the west coast. He then moved to outside sales in 2010 as a regional product marketing manager for the Midwest where he did site visits, contractor consultations, architect design assistance, and general pricing inquiries. In 2015, Dan accepted a position as the Senior Manager of Product Marketing where he currently oversees a team of regional product marketers and estimators.
