Description of BS 4048:Parts 1 and 2:1966 1966

Part 1 of this British Standard applies to ropes manufactured from strands of galvanized steel wire covered with fibre.

These ropes are made up of 4 or 6 strands laid around a fibre main core. Each strand is made up of 6, 12 or 24 wires laid round a fibre strand core and covered with a number of fibre yarns (see Table 1A to Table 1D).

The following rope constructions are included in the ranges of sizes (circumference) indicated:

4 × 6 combined 1¼ in to 2½ in circumference
6 × 6 combined 1¼ in to 3½ in circumference
6 × 12 combined 1¼ in to 4 in circumference
6 × 24 combined 2 in to 4 in circumference


Part 1 Ropes made from strands of galvanized steel wire covered with fibre. Nominal sizes in circumference, length tolerance, approximate weight, material requirements, breaking load, marking, certificate of test and examination. Part 2 Cable-laid ropes comprising six main strands laid round a fibre main core, each main strand made up of three fibre strands laid alternately with three wire strands over a fibre strand core. Nominal size in circumference, weight tolerance, material requirements, breaking load, marking, certificate of test and examination.
